Retired Army warrant officer loses it on Thanksgiving guests who mock his service and his wife, delivering a speech that clears the room: ‘My dad said something that just set me off’

  • AITAH for losing it on my thanksgiving guests

A man angrily points forward while a family sits around a holiday dinner table in the background. with a quote: "There is a limit to the disrespect I can allow"
  • So this is a very long and complicated story so I'll try to streamline it. I (38m) have been with my wife (39w) since I was 18 and I am a retired army warrant officer.
  • Ever since we moved in together my wife has thrown big thanksgivings because she likes the idea of having a big happy family, which I find to be a delusional idea, as both of our families are fucking awful.
  • The only time they're happy is when they're trying to tear us down. This year we had her brother (50m) (who's the only cool one), his wife (who is my least favorite of the bunch), her family (who hates the us military and by some cosmic coincidence are from the same country I was deployed to in 2007, being vague on purpose, and vocalize their opinions to me every time I see them), my sister and my dad (who look down on me because I didn't go to college after high school and had to use the gi bil
  • The day goes as it usually does. I try to make conversation with my brother in law while his in laws and my dad butt in to make a passive aggressive comment and his in laws going on amongst for the millionth time about how they hate the us army.
  • My wife is trying to finish cooking with her mom (the only other cool one) while her sister and my sister bitching at her over whatever.
  • A family sits around a festive holiday dinner table, chatting and eating together in a warmly decorated home.
  • In the past when me and my wife were still dating I could handle it with my sister when she was bullying my wife (she'd make those kind of anti Hispanic comments that you know are racist but just vague enough to make you look like the crazy person for saying something) and it'd usually leave her in tears after, but my wife made me stop.
  • It was about an hour before dinner and my dad said something that just set me off.
  • He said "At least one of my kids didn't waste their lives in the army" Here's where I feel I'm the asshole because I was about 4 boors in and at my limit.
  • Angry man in a maroon sweater pointing forward with a frustrated, confrontational expression against a dark background.
  • I told him "Fuck you im retired at 38 and [sister's name] got a degree in childcare and still lives with you.
  • Honestly fat man I'm pretty sure this is your last thanksgiving anyway so why are you trying to start shit?" I then turned to the other family and said" and if you fuckers hate soldiers so much maybe you should stop coming to their houses, eating their food and drinking their liquor you freeloading parasites" Dinner was awkwardly quiet and everyone left almost immediately after.
  • Unbeknownst to me one of them recorded me ranting and put it in the family group chat and my wife is furious with me but honestly there is a limit to the disrespect I can allow towards us and our household.
  • So AITAH?
  • Sad-Boat6398 I really hope this is a true story because I need to believe that there are people who actually move on from toxic relationships. So many people stick by family and I don't understand it. If they have nothing to contribute positively to your life the least they can do is not be wankers and shitty.
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 Yeah they're just genuinely shit people. Honestly the ones I hate the most are my BIL's in-laws. They aren't related to me at all, aren't my problem, and have this bullshit story about how some distant relative was wronged by the army that they bring up every chance they get.
  • kmflushing Everyone just kept eating quietly after you telling them off? No replies, arguments, pretend outrage, nothing? Then left after? I want to believe this is real but...
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 I mean they are very passive aggressive people and I was channeling my drill sgt days yelling till I was red in the face. Also they're just in general shameless freeloaders. You could spit on their child and they'd still stick around for a free meal. The in-laws not related to me will make their kids not eat all day so they can eat everything at a birthday party and will disrespect you and still try to grab some plates to go.
  • TheOfficialKramer Why are relatives of relatives who are that distant all coming?
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 It's a whole thing but basically my bil's wife won't let him unless she has her family there
  • Street-Avocado8785 ESH the relationships you describe sound exhausting. What is the point of hanging out at all?
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 Because my wife gets to see our nephews and her brother. His wife is a bitch and doesn't allow him to go to family events without her and if she goes her family also goes even tho they live in the same town as us and can do it on different days. We offered to do our thanksgiving the day before or after and that just wouldn't work for some goddamn reason.
  • TheOfficialKramer Wait a man, why are the in laws of in laws coming to your house. I am an Air Force vet and ya, we are all better than you lowley grunts, I'd say that to your face. However, these people are scum and I'll be damned if someone who disrespects my Army heros would ever be welcome in my house. I love to rag on my Navy Queers, Army Boot Lickers, Marine Crayon Tasters and those other guys who ride boats around beaches, but I don't tolerate anyone who hasn't served to do that. Seriousl
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 My wife is a lovely woman who puts up with a lot to see our nephews. Also I deployed a lot and made her move a lot and she put up with that.
  • RedundantPundant Ooh Rah Soldier! Lock and load. If they don't start none, won't be none!
  • OP Aromatic_Air_3480 I get you're on my side but...no.
  • Ok_Efficiency5817 NTA and high fives all around for telling those assholes off. Fuck them!
  • Organic-Mix-9422 As an Australian, I get the distinct impression that Thanksgiving is a forced family meal with a rigid food menu that not everyone likes parts of. There seems to be a lot of stress and drama around the day. Yay us for just having Christmas.
  • PibbyandPekes Mom Good for you! And your wife needs to stop with the nice dinners for toxic people.
  • ResponsibleHuman64 They had it coming. How dare they continue to disrespect you and your home. Go NC with these AH. BTW, you are NTA! Retired Warrant Officer is nothing to be ashamed of. Thank you for your service.
